FSU Researches Obesity Among Hispanic Kids.

As Obesity is on the rise in America, acquiring almost epidemic proportions, there are evidences that Hispanic/Latino kids are a greater risk. As those children make up the core of the fastest growing ethnic group in our country, there is an increasing interest in studying overweight as an issue of public interest.

An analysis of the US Census Bureau, by the Pew Hispanic Center shows that by 2007, 22% of all children younger than 18 in USA are Hispanic, being the majority of them born in America. With a grant from the Robert W. Johnson Foundation, the College of Medicine at FSU has started a two year project, involving about 2,500 Hispanic/Latino children in Collier and Gadsden, FL counties.

The study aims to better understand the problem, thus finding appropriate measures to be taken. In charge of the project is Dr Javier I. Rosado Ph.D. who curiously enough is not a Physician. He is a Postdoctoral Psychology Fellow at FSU who specialized on children mental health, since as he notes: “Obesity is not only a physical status, is a problem that entails socio-economic and cultural aspects, that has emotional, social and economic implications”. Obesity, nowadays, is not only considered matter of pounds. Instead it is measured by Body Mass Index (BMI) which takes also height into consideration.
