As those children make up the core of the fastest growing ethnic group in our country, there is an increasing interest in studying overweight as an issue of public interest.

An analysis of the US Census Bureau, by the Pew Hispanic Center shows that by 2007, 22% of all children younger than 18 in USA are Hispanic, being the majority of them born in America. With a grant from the Robert W. Johnson Foundation, the College of Medicine at FSU has started a two year project, involving about 2,500 Hispanic/Latino children in Collier and Gadsden, FL counties.

The study aims to better understand the problem, thus finding appropriate measures to be taken. In charge of the project is Dr Javier I. Rosado Ph.D. who curiously enough is not a Physician. He is a Postdoctoral Psychology Fellow at FSU who specialized on children mental health, since as he notes: “Obesity is not only a physical status, is a problem that entails socio-economic and cultural aspects, that has emotional, social and economic implications”. Obesity, nowadays, is not only considered matter of pounds. Instead it is measured by Body Mass Index (BMI) which takes also height into consideration. Check out our video to know Doctor Rosado and his opinions.

Also you can calculate your BMI by control+clicking here

By now you might be wondering: Who needs another Blog? What is the reason for this one to exist? and What is in it for me? Well .. we wondered the same! After some thinking and time involved with the Hispanic/Latino communities in Southwest Florida, we came to believe that some people -hopefully lots of them- regardless ethnicity, culture or origin, would like to learn more about Hispanic/Latinos in the USA, by finding information that not only is interesting and relevant for everybody, but also is presented in English Language.

By the way, this is Luis Alejandro Bernal, a professional specialized on international development, who is proud of his Hispanic heritage and loves reading, researching, writing, consulting and working with people, business and communities to foster communication, understanding and relationships for all of us; and that its, precisely, what this blog is about.

We will put the most effort in posting information we have collected by ourselves, such as interviews, reports, events, opinions we have directly being in contact with. We will emphasize on seeking your opinion and now and then we will present our own. Your active participation will make the blog meaningful. Other than that, we will research and forward information we have found elsewhere, mainly on the web. We will strive to post twice a week, initially; then we will see.

This Blog is not about us, it is entirely about you, whether you are Hispanic/Latino or not. Therefore, you comments, suggestions and kind critique is not only sought but also appreciated.

Again welcome to Hispanicwise; hope to see you around.
